Verbatim

Privacy Policy

Last updated July 2, 2026

Verbatim is a local, on-device dictation app, built so your voice and text stay on your device. This policy explains what Verbatim does — and does not do — with your data.

01

The short version

  • Audio is captured and transcribed locally on your device.
  • No account, no sign-in, no telemetry, no analytics, no ads.
  • Verbatim works fully offline once a model is downloaded.
  • Verbatim does not sell or share your data.
02

What stays on your device

  • Audio — captured from your microphone only while you dictate, transcribed locally, and never uploaded.
  • Models — downloaded speech and language models are cached on disk.
  • Settings — your preferences (hotkey, selected model, and similar).
  • History & dictionary — transcripts and custom words you choose to save are stored locally on your device.
03

When data leaves your device

Verbatim only sends data off your device in these specific cases:

  • Model downloads — the app downloads model files over HTTPS from their hosting provider. This fetches files only; it transfers no personal content.
  • Optional AI post-processing & text transforms — Verbatim can optionally clean up, format, translate, or rewrite dictated or selected text. If you turn this on and configure a remote AI provider (for example, an OpenAI-compatible API), the relevant text is sent to the provider you choose, under that provider's terms and privacy policy. This is off by default, no provider key is bundled, and you can instead use a fully local model so processing stays on your device.
  • Updates — app updates are delivered through the Microsoft Store or your chosen download source.
04

Microphone

Verbatim uses the microphone solely to capture audio for transcription, while you are actively dictating. In the default configuration it does not record continuously in the background.

05

Android accessibility service

On Android, Verbatim offers an accessibility service (AccessibilityService API) whose sole purpose is to insert your dictated text into the text field you are typing in, at the cursor, when you tap the floating Verbatim bubble.

  • It reads only the currently focused text field, so it can place your words at the cursor.
  • It skips password fields and other sensitive input fields.
  • It does not read, collect, store, or share your screen content, and no accessibility data ever leaves your device.
  • The service does nothing until you explicitly enable it in Android's Accessibility settings, after an in-app disclosure.
06

Data we collect about you

None on our side. Verbatim has no backend account system and sends us no usage, diagnostic, or personal data. There is nothing for us to store, because the app runs on your machine.

Because everything is local, deletion is in your hands: remove transcripts and recordings in the app's history, tighten retention in settings, or clear the app's data to erase everything. There is no server-side copy to request deletion of.

07

Children

Verbatim is a general-purpose productivity tool and is not directed at children.

08

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. When we do, the “last updated” date above will change.
